Observation Narrative
Plot is representative of the broad, high, well-drained floodplains along the river between Turkey Run and Dead Run. The stand is dominated by large Platanus occidentalis, a subcanopy layer of Acer negundo, and dense colonies of Asimina triloba in the shrub layer. The vernal display of Mertensia virginica in this area is spectacular but gives way to rapidly growing colonies of Urtica dioica as the early summer approaches.
0-1cm: leaf litter/ duff
